Troubleshooting Internet Issues

  1. Power cycle the dish – unplug the small power box from power (black or white with two Ethernet cables), wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in.
  2. Power cycle your router – unplug for 10 seconds and plug it back in.
⚠️ Do not press the “Factory Reset” button on the router – this will erase settings and require reconfiguration.
  1. Check the status lights on your router. Most consumer Wi-Fi routers have LED indicators that can help identify issues. While meanings vary by manufacturer, green usually indicates normal operation, while red or orange typically signals a problem.
  1. Run a speed test at speedtest.net using both Wi-Fi and a wired connection (if available).
  2. Try bypassing the router. Use a computer or laptop to plug directly into the Ethernet cable that normally connects to your router. If the internet works when connected in this way, the router is likely the source of the issue.

Note: SonTech does not own or manage your router — it is the customer’s responsibility. If your router is faulty, you may replace it with one of your own choosing or purchase a replacement from SonTech. Be sure to use a standalone router or mesh system, not a modem/router combo.

Getting Internet with SonTech

  1. We check whether your location has a line of sight to one of our towers.
  2. If a connection is possible, we’ll discuss where to run the indoor cable and place the equipment.
  3. Our technician will mount the dish (usually on a soffit or roof peak).
    • If the roof is used, it will be properly sealed to prevent leaks.
  4. We’ll run an outdoor-rated CAT6 cable into your home, usually requiring a 3/8” hole, which will also be sealed.
  5. Finally, we’ll set up your router and ensure your devices are connected.
    •  Router Options:
      1. You may provide your own router
      2. Or purchase one from SonTech at the time of installation

🕑 Most installs take around 2 hours, but we recommend blocking off up to 4 hours. A legal adult must be present during the installation.

SonTech provides the internet connection to your home, but the Wi-Fi router is your responsibility. You’re welcome to use your own router, or you can purchase one from us during installation.

To make sure everything runs smoothly, we recommend using a standalone router (not a modem/router combo). Brands like Netgear and ASUS tend to work very well and are easy for most people to manage. Most major stores such as Best Buy and Walmart carry these brands.

Do you need Wi-Fi throughout the whole house?
A mesh system (like ASUS AiMesh or Netgear Orbi) can be a great option for stronger signal across larger spaces.

If you’re not sure what to buy or want to purchase a router from SonTech, just let us know — we’re happy to help.
